Star Trek Beyond Crew review

STAR TREK BEYOND – Boldly Going To All the Right Places

Star Trek Beyond is everything it should be. It’s a film about discovery, teamwork, hope, and the miracles and dangers of scientific achievement – a lot of the elements that were sidelined when J.J. Abrams rebooted the series. Beyond not only returns focus to these principle tenets of Star Trek, it’s also able to maintain the humor and excitement that made Abrams’ chapters such crowd pleasers. Simply put – It’s the best of both worlds. This isn’t to say that the film is a flawless masterpiece. Its editing and VFX…

THE JUNGLE BOOK – Welcome to the Jungle, We’ve Got Fun and Games

The Jungle Book: Jon Favreau’s 2016 “live action” remake of Walt Disney’s 1967 animated adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s 1894 collection of short stories. Jon Favreau is a famously analogue director. His 2005 Zathura largely eschewed digital effects for practical props, and when he directed Iron Man in 2008 he refused to film the hero’s digital double in a way that couldn’t have been captured with practical aerial photography. But with the exception of its star, (12-years-old and charmingly rough around the edges) Neel Sethi, as Mowgli, Favreau’s Jungle Book is an entirely digital fabrication. Despite the fact that it apes a live action look, in actuality it is nearly as pure an animated feature as Disney’s original adaptation.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD – Return of Meow-Meow

I can’t imagine anybody being disappointed with THOR: THE DARK WORLD… That is, unless they were expecting something other than the continuing narrative of Marvel’s version of the God of Thunder. I think the thing that impressed me most about the film, (other than the fact that it handily passed the Bechdel test), was that it didn’t strain to prove itself worthy. As a long time fan, it’s nice to see Marvel studios growing more confident in themselves. With each film they seem to further perfect the art of making…

PACIFIC RIM – “Elbow Rocket Engaged”

Pacific Rim is Hella Stupid Fun! It would be easy to nitpick the film to death, to dock it for the cliches, the silly characters, and their even sillier deliveries… but when it all comes right down to it the movie is just massively entertaining. Guillermo Del Toro has crafted the ultimate Saturday morning cartoon. Robots and Monsters beat the ever loving crap out of each other, and they do it in style. If this sounds amusing to you, you owe it to yourself to check the film out… in…
