STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS – Less Than the Sum of its Parts

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was an entertaining summer romp, but lacked the depth or weight necessary to leave any lasting impression. The plot always seems to be a few steps removed from any true galactic threat, and instead focuses on more personal ones… which are then undermined by amusing but ill-timed jokes. DREDD – I Judge This Film Guilty… of Being Awesome

You really can’t do much better than DREDD if you’re looking for a pulpy, action-packed gorefest. Karl Urban’s performance as the title character is amusingly grim, and Olivia Thirlby grounds the film well as Dredd’s likeable rookie trainee. Filming the post-apocalyptic, American “Mega-City One” in South Africa was a stroke of genius. Despite how over-the-top it is, the most disturbingly prescient thing about it is how realistic the environment and society feels. This future could exist if we let it.
